These graphs may look the same but they are not.

The top graph shows Middlesbrough's finishing table position exactly for each year.

The second chart compensates for differing table positions whithin the English league system.  Each table position in turned into a percentage number relative to the number of teams in the league to reflect a true real indication of standing.  (Since 1950 there have been 92 league positions but for many years before that there were 88 and before that 36, 32 and various lower numbers during the early decades of the the league).
